After 26 years of teaching Shop Class I thought it was time to take a break…so that's what I am doing now. Two years ago my wife Debra went to Kenya on a Mission trip. She worked with a group from our Church in a slum called Kibera in Nairobi. Kibera is the largest slum in Africa, where about 2.5 million people are living. Kibera accounts for 60% of Nairobi's population but only 6% of the land. My excuse for not accompanying Debra was that the trip was during the school year. This summer our Church went back to Kenya and because I was away from school I had no more excuses and followed Debra and the team.
Although I was told many times that I would receive more from the Kenyans than I could give them, it took a voyage to understand what it meant. There in the villages and countryside I met so many people who were truly connected to God. Lacking so many things we take for granted, they are grateful for what they do have. Working side by side with them on various projects I could see their pride in doing things to honor God. I would say that they were "Giggin for God".
